Social Phobia, also known as Social Anxiety Disorder, is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense fear or anxiety related to being present in social situations where the person must speak or interact with others, give a speech or perform, or be observed or evaluated by others. The person fears that their behavior will show evidence that he/she is anxious and that others will perceive them as anxious, causing them to become embarrassed or humiliated. Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder also fear social rejection. The fear is so severe that the person typically avoids social situations or circumstances where they will be subject to evaluation from others and this can affect their ability to function, hold a job, or have healthy relationships with others. If the person must confront a social situation, they do so with intense fear and anxiety.
