Eating Disorders are a category of mental health disorders where the person has difficulty maintaining healthy eating patterns and healthy behaviors associated with eating. The most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. In Anorexia Nervosa, the person consumes low calories over an extended period of time and tends to have a low body weight as a result. In some cases, these individuals will engage in binge eating followed by vomiting or using other methods after eating, such as laxatives. They have a significant fear of gaining weight or becoming overweight and place much of their self-worth on their weight and on maintaining a thin physical appearance. People with Anorexia Nervosa fail to realize that their body weight is low and can experience dangerous or life threatening health problems. In Bulimia Nervosa, individuals have repeated episodes of binge eating, feel a lack of control over their eating, and will engage in vomiting or other methods to prevent weight gain, such as excessive exercise, fasting, or using laxatives or diuretics. These individuals have similar body image and weight concerns as people with Anorexia Nervosa only people with Bulimia Nervosa typically maintain a normal body weight or can even be overweight in some cases.
