Grief counseling is a therapeutic treatment method that provides specific interventions and coping skills for people struggling with grief and loss issues. Individuals who seek grief counseling have experienced a significant loss, such as the death of a loved one, divorce or separation, job loss or any other significant life event. Typically, the person finds the loss difficult to cope with on his/her own; therefore, they are either encouraged by loved ones to seek grief counseling or they seek counseling based on their own decision. A grief counselor helps the individual emotionally process the loss and proceed through the various stages of grief with the ultimate goal being to assist the grieving person in being able to resume normal functioning.
