Group Therapy is a popular therapeutic treatment approach where a group of individuals meet with one therapist (or sometimes two therapists) who serves as the group leader. Therapy groups are often conducted for specific topics or presenting problems, such as groups for depression, anxiety, substance use, anger management, and grief and loss, among numerous other topics. The therapeutic aspect of group therapy is believed to occur as a result of bringing people together who have similar concerns and life struggles. The support from the group, under the direction of the therapist, provides a positive social network for group members and providing or giving support to others in the group is also a significant therapeutic factor. Group therapy provides valuable coping skills and learning experiences that can be delivered as a supplement to individual therapy or on its own as a person’s primary source of mental health treatment.
