Depression

postpartum depression

Depression is known as a group of symptoms that occur, causing a person to feel sad or ‘down.’ A person can experience a brief period of depression if they are stressed or are experiencing a difficulty or hardship in their life, but when depression becomes more severe, the person can develop Major Depressive Disorder. This happens when the symptoms of depression become severe enough to affect the person’s ability to live their life and do every day things like work, go to school, interact with family, friends, or loved ones, and do things like take care of themselves, cook, clean, and do other basic daily tasks. Aside from a person feeling sad or ‘down,’ depression can cause people to become irritable, lose interest in things they enjoy, have difficulty sleeping, experience changes in their appetite or lose/gain weight, or feel hopeless and worthless. In some cases, people with depression can have thoughts of death, feel like they no longer wish to live, or in severe cases, can make attempts to harm themselves.
