Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that is debilitating and disabling to the affected person. It is characterized by the person experiencing hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and/or negative symptoms. Hallucinations involve the person seeing, hearing, feeling, or smelling things that are not truly present in reality, but instead are a product of the person responding to internal stimuli or productions of their own mind. People with Schizophrenia often hear voices that are scary or tell them to do things or can see things like demons or people. Delusions include beliefs that the person develops that are also not based on reality, can seem unusual, and can be a result of paranoia. For example, a person with Schizophrenia can have a delusion that the FBI is watching their home or that a device implanted in their TV is recording them. Disorganized speech or behavior involves the person’s inability to hold a conversation, make unusual remarks, or act in a strange manner, such as getting up and running out of a room or falling to the floor suddenly. Negative symptoms include a lack of emotional expression or loss of interest in doing any activities.
